The main attraction of the postseason, the primary playoffs, does not yet have any completed games, and fans continue to wait with bated breath for the results. However, in the Tier 2 consolation bracket, some teams have been hard at it, and the first winners in the division playoffs round have been crowned, as the 6-seed Chicago White Sox defeated the tie-7-seed Seattle Mariners in two games this morning.
The White Sox were considered the favorites to win the series, as they not only had the better record, but had defeated the Mariners soundly (22-1) during the regular season and have been on a hot streak lately, winning four of their last five games including an upset against the Cleveland Indians. The Mariners had concluded the regular season with a division sweep to boost their record to 6-8 and move up to the Tier 2 bracket, but they were unable to keep the momentum going during the playoffs.
Pitching all of both games for the White Sox, ace Randy Johnson stifled the Mariners’ offense, holding them to only six runs scored across both games, and thus dooming them to failure despite the fact that the Mariners put forth two of their best defensive games all season, holding the AI White Sox to a combined total of one run in both games. The team had only one game during the regular season where they gave up no runs, and two where they gave up one run. None of the Mariners was able to truly shine during the series, but Kenny Kawaguchi had a boosted bat for both games that helped him to go 4-for-5 with four singles during the series.
Mariners coach Eauxps I. Fourgott had this to say about the loss: “Obviously I’m disappointed that we weren’t able to do better, but I didn’t expect to win. The Mariners are good kids, but they had trouble focusing hard on the game all season long and made too many mistakes to be truly competitive. I’m glad for what we were able to accomplish during the season, and enjoyed playing with this team.”
With the conclusion of this series, the Mariners become the first team to be completely finished with BBL activities in Season 3.
In addition to an excellent job pitching by Randy Johnson, the White Sox were able to put up solid totals in both of their games, leading to two easy victories. They won Game One 15-4 and Game Two 8-1. While the entire team made useful contributions on offense, the series MVP was Joella Minotti, who went 7-for-7 with 9 RBI during the series.
White Sox coach Jibbodahibbo noted, “Randy Johnson showed up on both sides of the matchup! Sydney Webber far our performed [sic] Ashley (who slumped) Sydney is a true competitor, very impressive.”
The White Sox will go on to face the winner of the series between the tie-7-seed Crazy Wombats and the 5-seed Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox just barely missed out on the main playoffs this season, losing a wildcard tiebreaker to the Indians. Both the Red Sox and the Wombats are known for their teams full of sluggers, with the Wombats as a whole hitting one hundred home runs during the regular season, but the Red Sox are considered the favorite in this series due to a higher overall run total and the fact that they beat the Wombats in the teams’ regular-season matchup.
